    Introduction:

Savitribai Phule was one of the most powerful and revolutionary social reformers in Indian history. She is remembered as the first female teacher of India, a pioneer of women’s education, a poet, and a fearless fighter against social injustice. In the 19th century, when Indian society was dominated by rigid caste discrimination, gender inequality, child marriage, and denial of education to women, Savitribai Phule emerged as a symbol of courage and transformation.

Her life was not just about teaching; it was about creating a social revolution through education, equality, and humanitarian service. She dedicated her entire life to uplifting women, Dalits, and other marginalized communities.

Savitribai Phule was born on 3 January 1831 in Naigaon, Maharashtra, into a poor farming family. In those days, girls were not allowed to go to school. She was married at a young age to Jyotirao Phule, who later became her greatest supporter and mentor.

After marriage, Jyotirao educated Savitribai at home. She showed great interest in learning and soon became qualified to teach. Her education was itself a revolutionary act in a society where educating women was considered a sin.

Contribution to Women’s Education

In 1848, Savitribai and Jyotirao Phule established the first school for girls in Pune. This was a historic step in Indian education. Savitribai became the headmistress of the school.

However, society strongly opposed their efforts. People insulted her, threw mud, stones, and cow dung at her while she walked to school. Despite these humiliations, she carried an extra sari with her and continued teaching with determination.

She later helped establish several schools for girls and children from backward communities. Her efforts laid the foundation for women’s education in India.

She and her husband opened a shelter home for widows and started a care center to prevent female infanticide. She also encouraged widows to remarry, which was strongly opposed at that time.

Savitribai believed that education was the key to social transformation and equality.
